Jammu on high-alert after ceasefire violations

Jammu: It has been an uneasy 24 hours for Jammu.

Two soldiers of the Border Security Forces (BSF) were hurt in firing from across the Pakistani border on Thursday night. They are being treated in the Jammu Medical College Hospital. The intermittent firing continued till Friday morning, with India retaliating.

At a meeting later on Friday, Pakistan denied any firing on Indian posts. "At the flag meeting, we lodged a strong protest," says J B Sangwan of the Border Security Force, Jammu, "but the Pakistanis have not agreed as usual. They said their men have not fired. After the brief meeting, both sides agreed we should maintain peace."

But the BSF also warns that it will retaliate if there is more firing.

Officers are worried about a militant group sneaking into Indian side under the cover fire. So in Jammu town, the police checked every vehicle entering the city. The concern is that with the festival season launching, militants could try to strike soon.

Last week, five rockets were fired from across the border near Attari in Punjab.  Now, cross-border tension has spilled over to Jammu and Kashmir - a clear indication that despite the ceasefire agreement, peace on the border with Pakistan still remains fragile.
