Japanese tourist rescued from kidnappers posing as business partners

New Delhi: The Delhi Police today rescued a 20-year-old Japanese tourist from a gang that lured foreigners with fake business proposals and then duped them of money and other valuables.

According to the police, the Japanese was on a trip to Pushkar in Rajasthan when he came in contact with Rishi Raj and Pankaj Sharma - the two arrested in a gang of six - who claimed to have a business in delivering jewelry to the home countries of the foreigners. They asked him to join.

When the Japanese tourist expressed interest, they brought him to Delhi where they allegedly bought gold worth Rs 4.5 lakhs using his father's credit card.

The suspicious father in Japan then alerted the Japanese embassy in Delhi, which informed the police of the fraud. The young tourist had by then already spent five days with Raj and Sharma, who police say are fluent in Japanese.

Apart from the jewelry, police have also recovered a large amount of cash both in Indian and Japanese currencies from the two arrested. Four other members of the gang are absconding.

The tourist has returned to Japan.
