Jaswant, Raje campaigning for 'son' rise

Jaipur:

Call it maternal love or electoral compulsion - but for most of the past month, Vasundhara Raje's been camping in Jhalawar - a seat that she and son Dushyant won for the past 6 times.

But in the recent state elections, the BJP lost 6 of the 8 assembly seats here. And now Raje is even using recession logic to woo votes for her son.

"This is a good bargain for you as you'll get one leader free with one. Dushyant may be the candidate in this election but I'm always going to be there for you. Please think as if it is me who is fighting the election," said Vasundhara Raje, former CM, Rajasthan.

Miles away in Barmer, Raje's arch rival Jaswant Singh has even faced allegations of giving notes to win votes for son Manvendra. And a few weeks earlier Jaswant had also swept the streets of his native village in Barmer. But he resents any suggestion that it is a ploy for votes.

"Don't see everything only from an election viewpoint. I've been in the Army, I've handled guns. But I'm a Kshatriya and if I get a divine inspiration, I'll have no shame in holding a broom," said Jaswant Singh, former Foreign Minister.

The feud between these BJP leaders began 3 years ago when Jaswant's wife filed a case against Raje loyalists for 'insulting' Hindu religion by printing posters that depicted Raje as a goddess.

Later Raje hit back by ordering a police case against Jaswant for allegedly serving opium to guests at his home in Barmer.

The cold war between Vasundhara Raje and Jaswant Singh is now in its decisive phase. For both, ensuring a victory for their sons is critical as their verdict could well decide who will dominate the Rajasthan BJP in future.
