A gesture of goodwill or voters being bribed? BJP leader Jaswant Singh was seen giving money to people in his son's Manvendra constituency Barmer. Singh claims it is tradition. He was just helping poor people in his constituency.
The Opposition feels otherwise and wants an investigation. The Election Commission has asked for an explanation, but Singh is no mood to cooperate.
Speaking to NDTV, Jaswant Singh says he was helping poor people in his constituency. He won't apologise. Because, in his words, the law can be an ass.
The Election Commission is not willing to comment just yet . But the Congress is not holding back.
Congress spokesman Kapil Sibal says: "We will give him a Padma Bhushan for his generosity. Let him do it for the rest of the poor in the country, not in his son's constituency."
But the BJP is backing their former finance minister.
Tradition, goodwill or a violation of the model code of conduct - that's still to be decided. What is clear is that in the age of television there is no place to hide.
