An unexpected visitor for Jaswant Singh. Sushma Swaraj dropped by to see him on Monday. This was the BJP's first official contact with the man they expelled earlier this month for his controversial book on Mohammed Ali Jinnah.
The reunion was apparently not a pleasant one. Sushma Swaraj asked Jaswant Singh to quit as chairman of Parliament's most influential panel - the Public Accounts Committee. The BJP's argument is that the position belongs to the main Opposition party. But Jaswant Singh has refused to quit.
The chairman of the public Accounts Committee can be sacked only by the Speaker if there's a case of misconduct or failure to discharge duties. If the Speaker doesn't intervene, Jaswant Singh can last the full one year term.
The PAC chairman interacts closely with ministers and the PM. The position is also that of a super auditor's - one who can ask to see government file.
That could be awkward given that Jaswant Singh is now an independent MP.
Meanwhile, the BJP's Jaswant Singh troubles continue. The party's vice president, Pyarelal Khandelwal, has officially said that Singh's expulsion was hasty and should be reconsidered.
The request is made in a letter by Khandelwal sent to Rajnath Singh, LK Advani and RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat.
