Chennai:
In Tamil Nadu, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa claims to have established how a kickback of Rs 200 crore was paid to the DMK in return for favours delivered by DMK leader A Raja when he was Telecom Minister. Jayalalithaa says DMK chief M Karunanidhi and his family must now be made co-accused in the 2G case. (Read: Jayalalithaa's entire statement)
Mr Raja, a senior DMK leader, allegedly played the lead role in the massive 2G spectrum scam, which is now being investigated by the CBI after telecom companies were given licenses for mobile networks at inexplicably low prices.
In court on Thursday, the CBI said that a Rs 200-crore cheque was sent from Mumbai to Chennai where it ended up with Kalaignar TV, which is owned largely by the family of M Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister. His second wife owns 60% stake, his daughter owns another 20%.
The CBI said the money was being paid to Mr Raja by Swan Telecom's Shahid Balwa. Swan is one of the companies that the CBI says Mr Raja went out of his way to oblige with a 2G license.
Now, Jayalalithaa says that she has more details of how that bribe was routed. She says Mr Balwa transferred 209.25 crore rupees from 11 different companies to a firm named Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables, which then passed on the money to Cineyug Films, allegedly owned by Mr Balwa. According to Jayalalithaa, Cineyug's balance sheet shows an unsecured loan of 206 crore rupees to Kalaignar.
The DMK has steadfastly denied any inappropriate link to Mr Balwa. A statement by the party clarified that Cineyug did invest in Kalaignar TV's shares but owing to valuation differences, the money was treated as a loan and Cineyug's 200 crores was returned with interest in 2009. Kalaignar TV said the income tax department is aware of the details of this transaction.
