Chennai:
AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Monday organised a show of strength in Madurai - the bastion of DMK strongman and Union Minister M K Alagiri.
Madurai had been an AIADMK heartland, politically nurtured by her mentor MGR for over two decades. The party lost control over the temple town ever since Alagiri turned to active politics in 2006.
For the 2011 Assembly elections, Jayalalithaa has made Madurai a win-back mission.
"Is Madurai a private property of Alagiri and his father?" roared Jayalalithaa.
Traditionally, Madurai is seen as the political capital of Tamil Nadu clearly reflecting the pulse of the people. Is the huge turnout for amma a cause for the ruling DMK to worry?
"We are not worried. The crowds have been gathered by the AIADMK from all over Tamil Nadu, not the kind of spontaneous crowd that comes for DMK meeting," said TKS Ilangovan, DMK MP and spokesperson.
Two thousand policemen are guarding amma against an alleged death threat from the DMK and yet, DMK Minister Napoleon's car was allegedly stoned by AIADMK workers near the site of Jayalalithaa's rally.
The political rivalry is already scorching the roads of Madurai.
