Perambalur:
The 2G scam continues to be the most potent weapon in Jayalalithaa's arsenal against the government in Tamil Nadu.
On Monday, members of her AIADMK began a hunger strike on Raja's home turf, Perambalur. Jayalalithaa lashed out at the Chief Minister for asking his party cadres to highlight scams allegedly involving her.
She had also accused him of diverting attention from the 2G scam.
Tamil Nadu elections are just a few months away, and the 2G scam has already shot to the top of everyone's campaign agenda. The DMK is holding a series of public meetings and rallies where it will not just support Raja, but hail him as a hero who led the cellphone revolution in India.
Raja's contribution is assessed very differently by the government's auditor, which indicted him for costing the government 1.76 lakh crores by deliberately mishandling the allocation of mobile licenses in 2008. Raja stands accused of giving away 2G licenses at low prices to companies that he allegedly favoured.
The CBI is investigating Raja and his associates, his homes in Delhi and Tamil Nadu were raided earlier this month; and a formal inquest of the 2G scam is being monitored by the Supreme Court.
