Jet, Air India resume flights to storm-hit US
New Delhi: With two major airports in the US reopening after being hit by superstorm Sandy, Air India and Jet Airways today announced resumption of their flights to New York and Newark from Thursday.

Air India would operate AI-101 Delhi-New York and AI-191 Mumbai-Newark (EWR) flights in the early hours on Thursday, while Jet Airways would operate its flights 9W-228 and 9W-227 to and from EWR via Brussels, spokespersons of both the airlines said.

The massive storm had led to the cancellation of over 18,000 flights across the globe in the last two days, with the US authorities shutting down the three big New York airports - JFK, EWR and LaGuardia. New York has the nation's busiest airspace and cancellations there had dramatically affected travel to other destinations.

The decision by the two Indian carriers was taken on the basis of latest reports received by the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey regarding the reopening of the two airports they operate to, the spokespersons said.

Jet Airways and Air India had earlier offered passengers of the cancelled flights to make a change in their travel plans without any charges.
