Jharkhand villagers fight Maoists

Saarjamundi, Jharkhand: Saarjamundi village in Ranchi district wakes up to the sound of the rooster every morning but normal life continues under the shadow of the gun.

One of Jharkhand's most wanted Maoists Kundan Pahan operates from the region. But things have changed since the CRPF set up a camp in the village six months ago.

NDTV visited Saarjamundi, accompanied by the CRPF and discovered that there was no sense of fear among villagers.

Speaking openly against the Naxals, many said they have been pushed beyond the boundaries of fear.

"Earlier there was no unity, now we have decided to get rid of them," said Shyam Sundar Munda, villager.

It took the forces five months to convince the villagers to join the fight against Maoists.

The farmers are back in the fields, workshops on sewing conducted by the CRPF have been a big success.

"The development that was meant to happen is happening now. We are being trained on fishing and sewing," said Lalmal Tuti, another villager.

Sagar Munda and Sundan Munda tell us, they were forced to work for the Maoists. After nearly three years, they are free.

However, Kundan Pahan is still at large, though two of his associates involved in beheading police inspector Francis Induwar have been arrested.

""We are considering many ways to finish them off. The Naxals are anxious," said Nalin Singh, Assistant Commandant, CRPF.

But for this Jharkhand village it will take some time before the children run free on streets without the forces standing by.
