Jitan Ram Manjhi's Son Detained For Carrying Rs 4.65 Lakh in Cash

Parveen Manjhi told the police that he was taking the money for payment for an under-construction house in Patna's Hanuman Nagar.

Patna: The younger son of former Bihar Chief Minister and NDA ally Jitan Ram Manjhi was detained today for carrying Rs 4.65 lakh in cash, sources said. The police made the discovery while checking vehicles at a checkpoint at Maqdumpur police station in Jehanabad District.

Ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar - which will be held in October -- the Income Tax department and the state police have intensified crackdown on the use of black money and unaccounted cash.

According to the Model Code of Conduct, which is in place, no one is allowed to carry more than Rs 50,000 in cash without having a proper explanation.

Parveen Manjhi, a politician, told the police that he was taking the money for payment for an under-construction house in Patna's Hanuman Nagar, reported news agency ANI. He reportedly said he had taken the money from his family.

Jitan Ram Manjhi is the president of Hindustan Awami Morcha -- a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. He had formed the party this year after leaving the Janata Dal United in the wake of a long-drawn clash with Nitish Kumar over the Chief Minister's post.

Earlier last year, Praveen Manjhi had courted controversy, when he was caught in a hotel in Gaya with a woman constable. His father, who was the Chief Minister at the time, had defended him, asking what was wrong with his son having girlfriends.
