JNU Row: Home Ministry Promises Action Over Violence In Court

Rajiv Mehrishi said he will speak to Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi

New Delhi: The Home Ministry today said that those who indulged in violence in Patiala House court in Delhi will not be spared.

"If anyone violates law, action will be taken. I will definitely speak to Delhi Police Commissioner (BS Bassi)," Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi told reporters.

Mr Mehrishi's comments came hours after a group of lawyers assaulted journalist and JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar when he was being produced at the Patiala House court.

Asked about earlier attack on journalists on Monday, Mr Mehrishi said an investigation has been going on into the FIR and a counter FIR registered in that connection.

"Action will be taken as per law," he said.

On Monday, journalists, students and teachers of JNU were attacked by people wearing lawyers' black robes in Patiala House court.

Yesterday, hundreds of journalists hit the streets demanding action against those involved in beating up members of their fraternity in the court complex in police presence and sought Supreme Court's intervention for protecting freedom of speech.
