The Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) administration today warned the students against getting involved in incidents that disturb peace and harmony on campus. The warning by JNU came a day after two groups of students clashed in the campus yesterday.
At least sixteen students from both sides were injured as chaos reigned on the campus last evening allegedly after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students objected to non-vegetarian food being served at one of the hostels, Kaveri.
Akhtarista Ansari, a JNUSU student who suffered a head injury during the clash, said that ABVP members barged inside the Kaveri Hostel and started attacking the students because non-vegetarian food was being cooked in the hostel mess yesterday being a Sunday. "They also attacked the mess vendor who had come to supply chicken," she said.
ABVP's JNU Wing President, Rohit Kumar, said they are not against the non-vegetarian food being served in the hostel mess. Everyone is free to eat whatever they want," he said.
Mr Yadav alleged a pre-planned conspiracy by the rival group Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) behind the clash. The ABVP said the JNUSU students were against the conduct of the Ram Navami pooja and attacked them with sticks while the rituals were being performed.
Police early this morning registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA against unknown ABVP students.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said that ABVP members have intimated that they will also be filing a complaint, and necessary appropriate legal action will be taken on receipt of the same.
According to police, security has been tightened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University to maintain peace and ensure no untoward incident takes place again. "We have deployed our teams outside the campus. If the university makes a request, definitely our personnel will be deployed inside the campus," an official said.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) has condemned the violence that erupted in the Kaveri hostel mess. "The safety of students and the staff who work for the university has to be fully ensured," the statement said.
The JNUSU and ABVP students took out separate marches inside the university campus yesterday, blaming each other for the violence.
