JNU Violence Updates: Students In Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune Protest Against Violence In Delhi's JNU

Masked men and women ransacked the JNU campus, hit students and teachers with sticks and iron rods

Protests were organised in Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune against the violence that broke out in Delhi's JNU. Students of Javadavpur University in Kolkata, IIT-Bombay and FTII in Pune took out marches around midnight in solidarity with the students who were attacked by 50-60 masked men and women inside the JNU campus on Sunday evening.

Violence broke out in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) today evening. 19 students and a teacher are receiving treatment AIIMS Trauma Centre. All of them have sustained head injuries. Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union President Aishe Ghosh, who got injured in the violence, said she was attacked by "goons wearing masks". A group of masked goons entered the campus and went on a rampage, targetting teachers and students.

Eyewitnesses said 50-odd masked goons had entered the campus around 6.30 pm. A professor, Atul Sood, told NDTV, "The mob entered hostels and threw huge stones, vandalising property." Aishe Ghosh, the president of the students' union, said, "I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up".

The police, they said, are yet to take action.

Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav has said that he was assaulted thrice during his visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University after a mob of masked men attacked students.  

"Tonight I was assaulted thrice. 1st: APX 9:30 pm. While speaking to JNU teachers, a police inspector (no nameplate) dragged me and ABVP/RSS group (incl Prof Mishra, Sanskrit Dept) pushed me, pulled my muffler. I fell down, minor injury. Police contd to push me out after I got up," he tweeted.

"2nd:10:50 pm. I was with D Raja when 20-30 goons attacked me, kept abusing, shoving, hitting me & team (despite our singing national anthem). I fell on my back on road divider (soft tissue injury, no fracture), then kicked in my face (eye bruise). Police watched. DCP came later," Mr Yadav tweeted on the second incident of assault on him.

Outside Trauma Centre, AIIMS. When I arrived for check-up and MLC, outside emergency, Inspector Shiv raj hit my colleague Raja and my driver and then pushed me (in the presence of ADCP Parvinder Singh) despite knowing I was a patient. AIIMS staff was very good," he tweeted.

JNU Teachers' Federation urges agitators to not instigate students for violence
JNU Teachers' Federation (JNUTF) issued a statement urging protesters and agitators to not instigate students for violence, reported ANI.

"JNUTF appeals to agitators and their patrons not to instigate students for violence and criminal activities. We appeal to the JNU community to restore the peaceful environment of JNU where one can express his/her disagreement democratically," the statement read.

Mumbai students to march from Gateway of India tonight
Students from multiple colleges and institutions of Mumbai are gathering at Gateway of India tonight at 12 midnight to protest against the JNU violence and demanding action against the goons, failing which the students are demanding the immediate resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah.

Shocking, Disgusting, Cowardly: Bollywood On JNU Attack
Actors, director and public figures have spoken against the violence that broke out today evening at the JNU campus. Around 7 pm today, 50-60 masked men and women entered the campus of JNU in Delhi and ransacked the institute premises and beat up students who were peacefully protesting against a fee hike.

30 students and a dozen faculty members have sustained injuries during the attack and have been hospitalised. JNU Students' Union President Aishe Ghosh, who suffered severe head injuries, was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Suchitra Sen, who is a faculty of JNU's Centre for the Study of Regional Development, was also admitted to AIIMS with injuries to her head. 2 students remain in critical condition.
