John Kerry Calls Sushma Swaraj, Discusses India-US Ties

New Delhi: US Secretary of State John Kerry called Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj late last night and discussed ways to "re-energise" India-US ties.

"Re-energising Relations! Sushma Swaraj and John Kerry discuss re-energising the strategic partnership in (their) first talk (sic)," Syed Akbaruddin, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, tweeted this morning.

Mr Akbaruddin told news agency IANS that Mr Kerry also congratulated Ms Swaraj and her party, the BJP, for their election victory.

During the conversation, Mr Kerry stressed upon the need to enhance trade and economic ties and Ms Swaraj responded by emphasizing the importance India gives to strengthening the strategic partnership.

She reportedly also briefed Mr Kerry about India's engagement with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Both leaders reportedly said they were looking forward to meeting each other.
