In a sign of the worsening crisis, the Bahkara Nangal dam in Punjab, which is one of the most important dams in north India has just 10 days of water left in its reservoir.
The water level has been receding rapidly and has come down by over 90 feet since last year. Power generation too has come down to 310 lakh units per day.
The Bhakra-Beas Management Board has warned that the dam will have to be shut down in the wake of receding levels affecting Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Chandigarh.
The board advised northern states to use water "judiciously" due to delayed monsoon rains. It has also written a letter to the northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi to "judiciously" use water due to decreased water level in the Bhakra dam, a senior BBMB officer said.
