Nagpur: Outside a hospital in Nagpur, a young father has been keeping vigil for 72 hours, his wife by his side.
In the Intensive Care Unit, their four-year-old, a rape survivor, lies in a coma. Doctors have confirmed she has serious brain injuries. A ventilator helps her breathe.
"I just want my daughter to get well," says her father, who left his village in Madhya Pradesh to work as a daily-wage earner in Maharashtra. Every month, he would try to send back some money for his wife and their four children.
Since she arrived at this child specialty hospital on Saturday night on an air ambulance from Madhya Pradesh, six doctors have worked tirelessly to keep her alive.
The man who kidnapped her on Monday evening has been arrested. The man who allegedly raped her has not. "I just want to hear her voice," said her mother, "what harm had she done to anyone?"
Far away in another hospital in Delhi, the five-year-old whose rape has brought a new wave of protests to the capital, is reported to be recovering. She is talking to her doctors and parents, said those attending to her.
She was kidnapped on April 15 and found on April 18 locked up in a room below where her family lives in East Delhi. The police did not find her; it was her mother who heard her cries.
Two men, who allegedly raped her, have been arrested.
Her parents allege that when she was found, the police's response was to offer the couple 2,000 rupees to keep quiet about what had happened.
Delhi's Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said today, "There have been shortfalls, so the Station House Officer and his deputy have been suspended."
