New Delhi: There are three crore pending cases in India and the best legal minds of the country got together to deal with this perpetual problem of backlog. But at the end of the day, no solution seemed in sight.
Also the conference did not take up contentious issue of judges' assets.
One suggestion to do this at the earliest has been to cut down on holidays. As if on cue, that's precisely what the Chief Justice of India did at least for High Courts.
"In High Courts increase number of working days in a year from 210 to 220 or work half an hour more everyday," said K G Balakrishnan, Chief Justice of India.
The prime minister is rightly concerned, for it takes hundreds of thousands of litigants to get justice.
There are about three crore cases pending in Indian courts, the most being at the trial courts.
But at the annual conference of the chief justices and the prime minister, there wasn't much headway on another solution - hiring about 3,000 judges to fill vacancies.
"We are also assessing impact of new laws and what effect they have on courts," said Veerappa Moily, Law Minister.
