Mumbai:
Justice S R Bannurmath, former Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court has taken over as the Chairman of the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
"My priority will be to reduce pendency. If the complaints remain pending for a long time, it will be a violation of human rights," Justice Bannurmath said, soon after taking over.
Justice Bannurmath also pointed out the need for the SHRC to become available to citizens all across the state. "The Commission has to move out of Mumbai. We have to visit every district if the state and get day to day feedback", he said.
Justice Bannurmath was born on 23rd January, 1948 at Dharwad in Karnataka. He enrolled as an advocate in the year 1973 and was sworn-in as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court in March 2009.
Justice S R Bannurmath was also set to become the Karnataka Lokayukta in 2012 but the government's choice was rejected by then Governor H R Bhardwaj. However, Justice Bannurmath had himself written to then Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda, stating that he no longer wished to be considered for the role.
Justice Bannurmath also was the first Chief Justice in India who declared his assets along with all the judges of the Kerala High Court in September 2009.
Justice Bannurmath's promise to help all those who approach the commission is good news for the 12,000 complainants waiting for some relief from the commission. Justice Bannurmath also pointed out the specific role media plays in reporting human rights violations.
