Kolkata: The Rajya Sabha will take up on August 17 the impeachment proceedings of Calcutta High Court judge Soumitra Sen. The motion will be taken up at 3 pm.
Whether the judge will personally appear or his counsel will present the case to the lawmakers has not been decided yet, but they have been allotted 90 minutes to present their case.
According to Justice Sen's counsel, there is no question of the judge resigning ahead of the impeachment proceedings.
In November, a panel set up by Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari found Justice Sen guilty of misappropriating "large sums" of funds and making a false statement regarding it.
This is the second time Parliament has taken steps to remove a judge. Proceedings against Justice V Ramaswami of the Supreme Court in May 1993 fell through in the Lok Sabha.
The Rajya Sabha had set up a judicial panel to enquire into allegations against Justice P D Dinakaran, Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. Justice Dinakaran resigned on July 29.
