Jalka, Vidarbha:
Kalavati Bhadurkar is disappointed. She is just back from New Delhi, where she had gone to meet her powerful Congress connection, Rahul Gandhi, to remind him of the promises he made. But she couldn't meet him as he was not in town.
"Rahul Gandhi is a big man. Where does he have time for us?" said Kalavati.
Kalavati became an instant hit after the young Gandhi invoked her name during his speech in parliament last year.
In May 2008, Rahul visited Kalavati's house and life did change for her.
Local politicians helped her with cash and household items and the state government gave her a power connection. But the house in which she still lives is illegal. Kalawati claims Rahul had promised her a new home.
"He had promised me a home but he did not meet me. Now I do not want to meet," she said.
Kalavati is bitter but Congress sources tell NDTV that no appointment was fixed and there was no deliberate attempt to turn her away.
But her neighbours in village Jalka still believe that someone like Rahul will notice their plight too and at least a part of their lives will change for the better.
