Kamduni: A revised chargesheet is expected to be framed today in the gang-rape and murder case of a 20-year-old college student on June 7 in the village of Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

On July 4, when the first chargesheet was filed before the court, the judge had punched gaping holes in it and ordered a revised chargesheet to be presented.

Among the most glaring discrepancies in the earlier chargesheet was the fact that while seven people were accused of gang-rape, only one person was named in the attached case diary as having committed the crime.

The incident had become an embarrassment for the ruling Trinamool Congress government after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, faced with questions from a group of village women during her visit there on June 17, shouted at them and accused them of indulging in the politics of the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

Since the incident, Kamduni has been on the boil with the villagers staging regular protests demanding death penalty for the attackers and killers. The agitating residents are also expected to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on July 15 seeking his intervention in ensuring justice in the case.

The Kamduni case has become a rallying point for people from different sections of society on the issue of growing atrocities against women in West Bengal. The National Crime Records Bureau has put the state on top the country-wide chart of crimes against women in 2012.
