Bengaluru: Campaigning in Karnataka ended on a high note today as both BJP and the Congress rallied their forces for one final push. As a fitting end to its aggressive campaign, the BJP gathered at least 19 union ministers and several state chief ministers for rallies and roadshows across the state. The Prime Minister started the packed day with an address to party workers on his Narendra Modi App. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi addressed the media in Bengaluru and held a roadshow at Hubbali.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed  20-plus rallies in the last 10 days, reached out to Dalits and other backward communities and spoke of his government's initiatives for them.

  2. Attacking the Congress, PM Modi said the party never respected BR Ambedkar, the Dalit icon and the architect of the Indian constitution. "Until the Congress party was in power, Baba Saheb was not given Bharat Ratna," he said.  

  3. BJP president Amit Shah held a roadshow in Badami, the constituency from where Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is contesting. During his interaction with he media in the afternoon, he did not rule out claims by B Sriramulu, a key aide of scam-tainted mining baron Janardhana Reddy, that he could be appointed deputy chief minister if the party comes to power.

  4. Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Ananth Kumar, Prakash Javadekar, Piyush Goyal, DV Sadananda Gowda, Anurag Thakur, Krishnapal Gujjar and Santosh Gangwar were among the senior leaders who addressed around 50 mega road shows across the state.

  5. The BJP's three-time Chief Ministers Raman Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also part of the group that added to the party's show of strength in the state.

  6. The drama continued on the campaign's last day, with the Congress releasing a video they said shows BJP's B Sriramulu negotiating a bribe for a favourable verdict in a 2010 illegal mining case, with a relative of a judge, who was in the Supreme Court at the time.

  7. In his address to the media, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said the Congress came close to defeating the BJP in Gujarat. "Here, I am confident of the outcome," he said.

  8. Opinion polls have predicted that neither the Congress, nor the BJP will get majority in the state and former Prime Minister HD Devegowda's Janata Dal (Secular) will be the kingmaker.

  9. The JD(S), which is contesting the election with a tie-up with Mayawati, the Dalit powerhouse from Uttar Pradesh, has refused to support either party.

  10. Assembly elections for the 223 seats in Karnataka will take place on Saturday. Election to south Bengaluru's Jayanagar constituency has been put off following the death of BJP candidate BN Vijaya Kumar on May 4. The counting of votes will be held on May 15.
