Karnataka church attacks: First draft of inquiry

Karnataka church attacks: First draft of inquiry
Bangalore: Who is guilty of attacking a series of churches in and around Mangalore in Karnataka in 2008? A former High Court judge says it appears that rightwing Hindu groups - the Bajrang Dal, Sri Rama Sene and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) - are to blame.

Based on meetings with hundreds of witnesses, a commission headed by Justice B K Somasekhara states this in an interim report; the final report is expected later this year.

Worrying for the government, Somasekhara also says that top police officers, district administration and other authorities appear to have colluded with the right-wing organisations in these attacks - and that authorities did not treat the incidents sympathetically when alerted.

No individual names are mentioned, because a notice needs to be issued first to any accused to allow them to explain their position.

Acknowledging that a few of the attacks were self-inflicted or imaginary, Somasekhara's report also recommends that all criminal cases filed in connection with these attacks so far be withdrawn to promote harmony.

Somasekhara suggests that Karnataka's BJP government should publicly state its commitment to protect all religions

Earlier this month, a church was attacked in Mysore. Policemen said this may have been an attempted robbery, but the church's cash box was not touched. A statue of Mary was smashed.
