Karnataka crisis - over to Delhi

Bangalore: Further talks on the crisis within the Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will now move to Delhi, as Arun Jaitley wrapped up his visit to Bangalore.

Jaitley was in the city to try and patch things up between Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and rebellious ministers, including the wealthy mine owning Reddy brothers.

If Jaitley had hoped to be able to diffuse the tension in the ruling BJP in Karnataka during his two-day visit to the state, he was in for a disappointment. The powerful Reddy brothers of Bellary remain unhappy with Yeddyurappa's style of functioning, but the BJP's central leadership would seem to be backing the chief minister.

"We have had detailed discussion with a very large number of MLAs, senior party leaders and persons representing all kinds of viewpoints within the party. We have grasped all issues and within the framework of the party and its discipline, I am very confident that we will find a solution very soon to this whole issue. The government under Yeddyurappaji has been functioning very well. It will continue to function," said Jaitley.

"Arun Jaitley has been here for two days and has spoken to the concerned people. He has left and said he would let us know what has happened. When a national leader has come and discussed the issue and said he will provide information on that, I don't want to say anything more on this," said Yeddyurappa.

Leaders from both factions now say their focus is flood relief, even as they wait to hear from Delhi. The RSS has also been consulted.

"I disclosed it to RSS chief Jayadevji also. He suggested to talk to Arun Jaitleyji, so I talked to him. I told all the MLAs views and our views and he listened very nicely and he told we will continue these discussion.I am not directing a film, so I don't know when the climax will come," said Karunakaran Reddy, Dissident Minister.

It certainly does seem to be a drama in which none of the players wants to back down.
