New Delhi:
Amid the opposition cry over the alleged land scam in Karnataka, the BJP high command has called Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa to Delhi.
The Karnataka Chief Minister is expected to be in the capital today, he has lots of questions to answer as more and more documents are pouring out showing favour given to his family.
Opposition JD(S) lodged a complaint against Yeddyurappa with the Lok Ayukta on Thursday, accusing him of distributing land illegally among his family members. The big question is: Are his days numbered?
Yesterday, the Yeddyurappa government announced a judicial inquiry into the land scam. The panel, to be headed by a former Supreme Court or High Court judge, will look into all alleged land scams in the past 10 years. That means deals during previous Congress and JD(S) governments will also be investigated. (Read: Karnataka orders judicial probe)
Meanwhile, the party has reportedly decided that the Chief Minister's family will return the land which was allotted to them illegally.
This was decided after the BJP core group met at the residence of senior leader LK Advani in the wake of demands by the Opposition parties in the state for the chief minister's resignation.
"The core group decided that in the next few days, the national leadership will discuss all these matters with the Chief Minister and other important ministers. We will talk to them, and possibly call the main leaders to Delhi and after that whatever is decided will be conveyed to you," BJP leader Arun Jaitley said.
There are also reports that there are divisions within BJP in the state with some MLAs reportedly initiating a campaigning for his removal.
The BJP is worried over the impact of Karnataka crisis on its campaign against corruption in UPA government. The party is in a tight spot on Yeddyurappa issue especially as they have assiduously been campaigning against the UPA on corruption.
But the removal of Yeddyurappa may cost the saffron party heavily in electoral terms as they may lose crucial lingayat voters. Yeddyurappa's removal will also strengthen the rebels, which may not bode well for the Karnataka BJP government.
