Karnataka: Yeddyurappa's sons in land scam?

Bangalore: The Congress on Friday today sought to turn the tables on BJP over its allegation that Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan hid information about owning a flat in Mumbai saying it should first clarify on alleged allotment of government land to B S Yeddyurappa's sons in Karnataka.

"Before raising accusations against anybody, BJP should look inward. A piece of government land was allotted to a private company owned by Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa's two sons," party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.

"As long as BJP does not give a clarification to this, they do not have a right to speak on such issues," he said.

He alleged that the Karnataka Chief Minister was instrumental in getting the land registry done for the particular company which was formed just a month ago. "It is
strange that in May, the company was formed and in June, government land was allotted to it."

Reports had it that a piece of land acquired from two people by Bangalore Development Authority was later sold off to Yeddyurappa's son and son-in-law.

Ahmed, however, declined to comment the merit of the allegation against the recently sworn-in Maharashtra Chief Minister saying he does not know about it and has not seen reports regarding it.

Asked whether the Chief Minister's chair in Maharashtra is jinxed and that whoever goes there lands up in some controversy, Ahmed replied in the negative saying "a number of people have successfully governed the state in past. I do not
accept that the Chief Minister's chair is jinxed there."

Accusing Chavan of hiding information about his Wadala flat in nomination papers of Rajya Sabha, Mumbai BJP demanded action against him.

"Chavan filed a false affidavit by not declaring his flat at Wadala as an asset. Also it is surprising that the flat reserved for weaker sections was allotted to him and (he) is liable for action," BJP leader Vinod Tawade said.

Chavan got a flat in Venus Society at Wadala through Chief Minister's five per cent housing quota which was meant for the poor. The flat was allotted in the name of Chavan's mother Premlabai Chavan in 2003 since she had to be in the city for cancer treatment.

However, Tawade claimed that the application for the flat has Chavan's name and photo. The Chief Minister should be punished over this, Tawade said.

The BJP leader also tried to link Adarsh Housing scam to Chavan, due to which former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was forced to resign.

"Chavan's then OSD Sanjay Radkar who passed away some time ago was the member of the Adarsh Society. In fact, the membership was awarded to Radkar after the official job," Tawade said.
