New Delhi:
The widespread concern that even though the Mumbai 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab has been sentenced to death, he will actually never be hanged. It now seems the government is determined to fast track Kasab's hanging.
Speaking exclusively to NDTV, Law Minister Veerappa Moily said that even the President will speed up the process and Kasab will be hanged soon.
Moily said since public sentiments are attached with the terror attack, the courts can adopt a speedy procedure.
"Kasab case will be one such case which needs to fast tracked by the High Court and definitely the verdict should be given," Moily said.
"Sentiment is riding very high and this matter has to be considered by everyone, I don't think either President of India or High Court or Supreme Court can work under political pressure, it's about law and order question. This man waged war against the country, he killed many people, it's barbaric, people witnessed it, what else is required to convict a person?" Moily added.
The Law Minister further said, "Being sentenced to death is the rarest of rare cases and this has been considered by the judge as rarest of rare case by the judge. Time has come we can't delay the process of mercy petition."
Ajmal Kasab was sentenced to death penalty on five counts and life sentence for five others on May 6.
"The depravity of the (26/11 attacks is unspeakable....this man has lost the right to humanitarian benefits," said Judge M L Tahaliyani, explaining his decision to give the death sentence to the only terrorist caught alive during 26/11.
