Srinagar: The 40-day-long Chillai-Kalan or the great chill season of Jammu and Kashmir began today.
The harshest period of winter in the state however started on a positive note, as there was some improvement in night temperate which was otherwise hovering around minus 4 degrees for the past once week in Srinagar. (Share your photos and videos here)
On Saturday the fringes of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar froze for the first time this winter. There has however been no snow fall so far.
The Met office has predicted light to moderate snow on the higher reaches on Monday and Tuesday and no significant change in weather in the plains.
Normally, tourists throng Kashmir's famous health resort Gulmarg to celebrate Christmas when it's covered under a think blanket of snow.
Meanwhile, in Ladakh, there has been no respite from the intense cold wave. The minimum temperate in the desert regions of Kargil and Leh, which was hovering between minus 13 and minus 14 degrees, went up by several notches today bringing much needed relief.
