Mercury has dropped several degrees below freezing point in Kashmir
Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir today witnessed heavy snowfall leading to the cancellation of all flights at the Srinagar airport. Officials said all the flights have been cancelled for today due to continuous snowfall.
Snowfall has ended a long dry spell in the Valley bringing cheers among locals and tourists.
According to the traffic department, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway is open for traffic despite snowfall between Banihal and Ramsoo in the Ramban district along the highway.
There was snowfall in higher reaches and parts of the Valley three days ago But today entire Kashmir is wrapped in a thick white blanket of snow.
So far, there are no reports of any major power breakdown.
Normally snowfall takes place in December and during the 40 day-long Chillai Kalan - the harshest winter period that starts on December 21 every year and ends on January 30.
However, this winter it went almost snowless with the Valley witnessing unusual weather conditions.
The Valley is currently going through a 20-day-long 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold) which shall be followed by a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold).
