KCR better, Government looks for compromise
Hyderabad: The Congress in Delhi is working towards a compromise formula for Telangana, which has been demanding its own state. Late on Wednesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah flew back to Hyderabad, after meetings the Prime Minister and Home Minister in Delhi. Sources say making Hyderabad a Union Territory is among the possible solutions the government is considering.

The discussions come at the end of another tense day in Hyderabad, and hours before a gigantic rally called by Telangana supporters in Andhra. The Chalo, Assembly call asks demonstrators to surround the Andhra Assembly. Hyderabad has been turned into a virtual fortress in anticipation.

K Chandrashekhar Rao or KCR, as he's known, provided the government with its only piece of good news on the issue on Wednesday. KCR's health improved after he accepted intravenous fluids in his hospital in Hyderabad on the 11th day of his hunger strike, but doctors are concerned about a fungal infection. He was in critical condition in the morning with protein malnutrition and extreme weight loss.

At Osmania University, hundreds of students and professors clashed with the police, which wanted them to vacate hostels. In the evening, a court order intervened to allow students to return to campus. Osmania University has been the epicentre of the new rounds of protests demanding a separate state of Telangana.

The two other regions of Andhra - coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema - are opposed to any bifurcation. The ruling Congress in Andhra is also divided over the issue.

The Andhra Assembly was adjourned for the second day in a row over the Telangana issue. The Opposition, led by KCR's Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) wants a resolution in favour of a separate state of Telangana. The ruling Congress government says the Centre needs time to find a solution. Twenty-five Congress MLAs from Telangana have written to Sonia Gandhi asking for an urgent solution to the crisis.

For Thursday's rally, more than 12,000 security personnel are on guard, including 4 battalions of the Rapid Action Force. About 1,900 paramilitary personnel have been airlifted to the state.
