KCR critical, Hyderabad on guard

Telangana: 25 Congress MLAs from Telangana have written to Sonia Gandhi asking for an urgent solution to the crisis in Andhra Pradesh. While Telangana wants statehood, the two other regions of Andhra  - coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema - are opposed to any bifurcation. The ruling Congress in Andhra is also divided over the issue.

Across the state, the tension has reached danger levels. At Osmania University, students and professors clashed with the police this morning when they were prevented from holding a rally on campus.  At least a hundred students and teachers have been arrested for violating Section 144 which has been imposed in all the 10 districts of the Telangana region.

Officially, Osmania University, along with other colleges in Telangana, was closed by the government till the 18th of this month as a precaution against campuses turning into battlegrounds over the Telangana issue.  The Andhra High Court has now struck down that government order.

K Chandrashekhar Rao, who is at the heart of the movement for Telangana, is in critical condition in hospital as he refuses to end his hunger strike.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was adjourned for the day without transacting any business for the second consecutive day today after the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) stalled the proceedings demanding a resolution in favour of a separate state of Telangana.

Speaker N Kirankumar Reddy, Chief Minister K Rosaiah and Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu made an appeal to TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao to call off his fast unto death to help maintain law and order in the state.

Doctors say KCR who has been on a fast for 11 days is malnourished. KCR who is in a hospital in Hyderabad has refused to accept any intravenous fluids.
Speaker Reddy adjourned the House twice earlier as the TRS members stalled the proceedings by entering the well of the House and raising slogans in support of their demand.

The Chief Minister urged the TRS members to let the House take up the business as per agenda as the government has already agreed for a debate on the Telangana issue.

He said the Central government should be given time to take a decision on the issue and noted that passing a resolution was not easy.

All groups that support the Telangana movement have called for a Chalo, Assembly Bandh on Thursday.  Thousands of people plan to surround the Assembly with a rally. Hyderabad has turned into a virtual fortress, with more than 12,000 security personnel on guard, including 4 battalions of the Rapid Action Force.
