New Delhi:
The agenda and terms of reference announced by the Centre today for its Telangana committee have sparked yet another round of political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh, with K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) asking all his party MPs, MLAs and MLCs to resign from their posts immediately in protest against the "betrayal".
The Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) chief has lambasted the UPA government saying: "The Centre has betrayed us once again." He has convened an emergency meeting of the TRS politburo to discuss the terms of reference of the Srikrishna Committee and chalk out a future course of action.
A Praja Rajyam Party MLA from Nirmal in Adilabad has also decided to resign, and Congress MLAs from Telangana will meet on Friday evening to discuss the committee's agenda.
The Osmania University Joint Action Committee has called for a Telangana bandh on Saturday and demanded that the Srikrishna panel be scrapped.
The Telangana leaders want modalities spelt out for carving out a Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh. But the five-member committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge, B N Srikrishna, was on Friday asked by the Centre to "examine the situation in Andhra Pradesh with reference to demand for a separate state of Telangana as well as the demand for maintaining the present status of united Andhra Pradesh." The committee has been asked to present its report by December 31.
KCR said the Centre's move was unethical. "We are disappointed with the terms of reference. We were given to understand that the Committee will discuss the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and how to carve out Telangana," said KCR's party. It also said that the December 31 deadline was unnecessarily long.
The committee has been asked by the government "to consult all sections, especially political parties, on the demand of a separate state, as well as the demand for maintaining the present status of united Andhra Pradesh." Pro-Telangana leaders have been asking that the government commit to the formation of a new state.
The committee, "will examine the impact of the recent developments in the state on the different sections of the people such as women, children, students, minorities, SCs and STs". (with PTI inputs)
