Kerala youth 'tortured' in custody
Alapuzha:

A 26-year-old youth in Kerala was subjected to beastly torture while in custody in a police station in Alapuzha. The victim, Sreekesh, who works with a prominent jewellery chain, is now admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram with severe injuries to his hands, legs and back.

The youth had gone to the police station on May 13 to report the loss of four kg of gold which he was carrying while traveling in a bus from Alappuzha to Kollam. He had collected the consignment from his owner's house in Alappuzha and was on his way to Kollam show room.

Sreekesh was kept in illegal detention for 12 days. The family of Sreekesh is yet to come to terms with the incident.

"He was tortured in custody. When I went to the police station I found him lying on the floor. He was running a high fever and had bruises all over. Despite repeated requests he was not taken to hospital," said victim's brother Sreeraj.

While the Human Rights Commission has initiated a probe into the torture incident, the Home Department is yet to initiate action against the police officers in question.

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has however, warned the police officers resorting to such methods of severe action.
