Khurshid to appear before Election Commission on January 20
New Delhi: Law Minister Salman Khurshid will appear before the Election Commission on January 20 to explain his stand on the alleged poll code violation.

Mr Khurshid in an election rally speech had reportedly said that sub-quota for Muslims would be doubled to 9% for state government jobs and colleges. A notice was sent to Mr Khurshid by the Election Commission after a complaint was filed against him.

Mr Khurshid had replied to the Election Commission's notice, reportedly saying that he had only used the word 'minority' and did not specify any caste or community so the statement does not directly violate any provisions contained in the poll code.

The Congress leader had also said that the actual election process had not started in Uttar Pradesh and that there was no declared candidate or party candidate, so there is no violation of the model code; it was only a general statement was given at the rally, the minister is said to have written in his reply.
