Kolhapur sex scandal: Top policemen transferred

Mumbai: A top police officer has been transferred after a policewoman recruit in the Kolhapur police training school alleged she had been raped by a constable there.

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil has also announced the transfer of the Superintendent of Police Yashaswi Yadav. Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Parkale and Police Inspector Dhyaneshwar Munde have also been suspended.

These policemen have been penalised for lack of supervision.

A constable, Yuvraj Kamble, had earlier been suspended and arrested on allegations of raping a policewoman recruit in the police training school in Kolhapur. Rupali Yadav had registered an FIR, saying that he called her home on the pretext of helping her with recruitment notes and raped her. Rupali also alleges that she became pregnant and was forced to undergo an abortion after Kamble threatened her.

The local media has reported that 11 other policewomen recruits in the training centre were raped by policemen, and they became pregnant.

The police have rubbished this allegation. The Civil Surgeon's report says: Of the 75 women recruits on campus, only two are pregnant. And the second pregnancy is the result of matrimony.
