Kolkata football clash: 12 arrested

Kolkata:

Twelve people have been arrested by Kolkata Police for violence after an irate mob set a premier resort in the outskirts of Kolkata on fire. The clash that took place on Sunday night left one person dead besides damaging resort property.

According to reports, the team that lost the match picked a fight with the referee. Soon, some trouble mongers stormed the ground, threw bombs and even opened fire, killing one person.

The hooligans then fled to the Vedic Village - a luxury tourist resort next door. Locals chased them and set some buildings on fire.

When locals gathered, the attackers entered the resort, Vedic Village, for shelter and set several cottages of the resort on fire.

The police said that problem started after the defeated team suddenly attacked the winners with bombs and guns.

"One person was killed and over 15 were injured in the clash. The injured were hospitalised. At least 30 cottages have been burnt and 10 fire tenders are trying to control the blaze," DIG (Presidency Range), S N Gupta said.

"Police and Rapid Action Force have brought the situation under control" Gupta added.

"We are investigating the incident and those found guilty will not be spared," IG (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said.
