Krishna Janmashtami: This year, Janmashtami is being observed on August 18 and 19.
New Delhi: Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Gokul Ashtami, is observed annually to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Considered the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna was born in a dungeon in present-day Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Janmashtami is celebrated on Ashtami or the 8th day of Krishna Paksha or the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. This year, Janmashtami is being observed on August 18 and 19.
As per belief, Krishna was born at midnight to Devaki and Vasudev. Devotees mark the day by observing a fast, which they break after conducting the puja. They also decorate idols of Krishna with peacock feathers and flowers and offer him his favourite maakhan or white butter, curd, and milk.
