Krishna meets Swaraj, discusses fishermen, university issues
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today met Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha SushmaSwaraj and conveyed to her the steps taken by the government on some issues over which she had expressed serious concern. He drove to the residence of the senior BJP leader after she tweeted about her request for a meeting with him to discuss the issues. Swaraj told reporters after the meeting that the matter of putting electronic clamps on Indians studying in a 'sham' US university, torture and killing of two fishermen allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy and the efforts being made to bring back Indians from Egypt were some of the issue discussed. Swaraj indicated that she was satisfied with the efforts made by the government. On the issue of bringing back Indians based in Egypt, which is facing political unrest and anti-government protests, Swaraj said, "The External Affairs Minister told me that from our side we will make all efforts. Three planes have been pressed into service." The BJP leader said Krishna informed her that he had sent Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to Sri Lanka to take up the issue of killing and torture of Indian fishermen. Krishna informed Swaraj that he had told the US in "unequivocal terms" that the treatment given to Indian students was unacceptable to India. "He told me categorically that we cannot allow any such treatment to Indians living outside India."
