Vijayawada:
Flood waters from the Krishna river have cut off Vijaywada town from the Hyderabad side, breaching the Chennai National Highway.
The river is swollen after 10 lakh cusecs of water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam were released on Sunday. Vijaywada's Prakasam Barrage has not received this much water in over a decade. The administration is trying to minimise losses.
Evacuation focus is mainly on the Krishna and Guntur districts that lie on the river. People from the low lying areas have been moved to relief camps.
Elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh, rescue and rehabilitation operations are in full swing as water levels start to recede.
