The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has given former Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya a clean chit in the murder case of Kunda Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haque. Along with the supplementary chargesheet, the CBI today filed a "technical" closure report in a Lucknow court.
Sources said Raja Bhaiya had cleared a lie detector test whose results were also submitted in the court today.
The CBI told the court it found during the probe that Raja Bhaiya used his influence to obtain a substantial number of arms licences for local villagers from the district administration of Pratapgarh, which were used at his behest for carrying out alleged illegal activities. However, CBI said this was not the area of its probe and a report in this regard is being sent to the state government for a thorough probe and necessary action.
Mr Haque's wife Parveen Azad had accused Raja Bhaiya of being involved in the murder case. Raja Bhaiya, who has a lengthy criminal record, has denied the allegations against him, though he was forced to resign as Minister of Food and Civil Supplies from the Akhilesh Yadav government.
Mr Haque was killed on March 2 in Pratapgarh district where he had gone to probe a village headman's murder. An angry mob reportedly cornered him, and eight policemen who were with him allegedly abandoned him. Three bullets were fired - one killed Mr Haque; the other two killed headman Nanhe Yadav's brother.
The CBI had registered four cases pertaining to the three murders and booked Raja Bhaiya in one of them.
