Lakhs have been displaced across the country in several states where monsoon rains have led to flooding. Maharastra, Karnataka and Kerala are the worst-hit states where dozens in have died this week.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa today said over 1,000 villages have been hit in the state by floods. Estimating the losses due to deluge at Rs 6,000 crore, he also blamed discharge of water from Maharashtra dam for adding to the state's troubles. He also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family members of people killed in floods.
In Maharashtra, thousands are still stranded in Kolhapur where locals are struggling amid shortage of essential facilities.
Kerala, which suffered its worst flood in a century, is again facing floods in several parts. More than 42 people have been killed and over lakh have been displaced.

People in Karnataka's coastal areas asked to move to safe areas immediately
Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has urged residents in low-lying areas to immediately shift to safe places, as the brimming river Nethravati is flowing at a dangerous level.
