Patna, Bihar: Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad has come out in support of the agitation led by Hardik Patel in Gujarat, calling the ruling BJP "anti-backward and anti-social justice," for not giving the Patel community reservation in jobs and colleges in the state.
"We fully and strongly support the demand for reservation by Patel and Patidar castes in Gujarat as it has the theme of social justice in its root. RJD is with them and will fight together with them," Mr Prasad told PTI.
Though the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief has opposed any kind of arson or violence due to the agitation, he blamed the state government for ignoring a just demand of the backward people.
Mr Prasad said, "It is now established that the BJP headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anti-backward and anti-social justice. They have always been opposed to reservation for the poor and downtrodden."
The RJD is a part of secular alliance forged by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United and Congress, which is pitted against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
Mr Prasad has asked his party workers to remain united with the Patel community in Gujarat, and his politics over the last three decades has largely revolved around reservation for backward castes.
The 67-year-old plans to tour different parts of the state to awaken people about the danger posed by BJP to social fabric of the country.
