Rashtriya Janta Dal Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav will need cardiac surgery based on preliminary medical investigations, his doctors have said.
"Laluji is fundamentally a healthy person, as can be seen from the intense campaigning he has done. Based on preliminary reports, we can now confirm that a cardiac surgery is needed," Dr Vijay D'Silva, Medical Director, Asian Heart Institute, said in a statement here.
"A few reports are pending. The details of what kind of surgery is needed will be available to us only after these reports come in," it added.
A further update from the hospital is expected later today.
The 66-year-old leader was hospitalized at the Institute in Mumbai yesterday for a scheduled detailed medical evaluation.
He had reportedly avoided extensive road travel and used a helicopter while campaigning for the by-elections to 10 seats assembly seats in Bihar this month.
