Chennai:
As things come to a head in Sri Lanka with the Lankan government claiming the end game for the LTTE, the backlash in Tamil Nadu is growing.
A day after 26-year-old Muthukumar set himself on fire in Chennai to protest the killing of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka, he is being called a martyr for the Tamil cause. And it's not just by pro-Tamil voices but also the LTTE.
Vaiko, MDMK general secretary, says: ",His sacrifice will be an indelible emblem in our struggle for Ealam.",
It's not just political parties. Thousands of students have also taken to the streets. Some even tried to lay siege to the Lankan Deputy High Commission office in Chennai.
",The Tamils there have the same blood as us,", one protestor says.
The Lankan President's 48-hour offer for a safe passage for Lankan Tamils they say is yet another gimmick to mislead the world.
In his dying declaration, Muthukumar wanted his body to be used as a `trump card` to exert pressure on the Centre to bring about a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. The funeral has had to be postponed to Saturday, with many protestors even saying they would not cremate the body till the Centre intervenes.
While there's growing anger, the campaign for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka is turning into a student's movement and the DMK stands isolated.
