Jammu:
The Jammu & Kashmir police is fighting militancy aggressively and from the front and the desperation among militants is showing. Local cops have received a warning purportedly from the Lashkar-e-Toiba telling them to quit.
Overnight, several letters were found pasted on walls in Doda district of Jammu, threatening local cops: Quit your jobs by the 20th or get killed. No month mentioned.
The warning has been issued in the name of Lashkar district commander Gul Mohammad.
Interestingly, it also flaunts a helpline number that can be called for clarification. When NDTV called the number, it was switched off.
The police shrug off the threats not willing to let morale flag when it is high, particularly after successful anti-militancy operations across the state recently.
Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, Kuldeep Khuda says, "They have been threatening for a long time. Yet the J&K police have continued to remain in the forefront of anti-militancy operations. These threats don't mean anything.''
The Lashkar has suffered heavy losses recently. In this year alone, eight top commanders have been killed by the security forces in Doda and Kishtwar districts. The police chief reckons this is the reason behind the threat.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has lauded the role of the state police and said: "Jammu-Kashmir police have played a very big role in restoring normalcy to the state.''
