India recorded 24,492 new COVID-19 cases, registering more than 20,000 cases for the sixth day in a row, taking the infection tally past 1.14 crore, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday.
The total cases in the country rose to 1,14,09,831, while the death count increased to 1,58,856, with 131 fresh fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.
Registering a spike in cases for the sixth day in a row, the total active caseload has increased to 2,23,432, which now comprises 1.96 per cent of the total infections. The recovery rate has further dropped to 96.65 per cent, it said.
As many as 26,624 new infections were recorded in a span of 24 hours on December 20.
Meanwhile, In its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, India has crossed an important milestone of administering over 3.17 crore vaccine doses, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday. A total of 3,17,71,661 vaccine doses have been given till Monday 7 pm, according to a provisional report.
These include 74,08,521 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the 1st dose and 43,97,613 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 74,26,479 frontline workers (FLWs) who have been administered the 1st dose and 13,23,527 FLWs who have received the 2nd dose of coronavirus vaccine.
Besides, 16,96,497 beneficiaries aged 45 and above with specific co-morbidities and 95,19,024 beneficiaries aged above 60 have taken the first dose.
"India has crossed an important milestone in its fight against the pandemic. In the world's largest vaccination programme, the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 3.17 crore today," the ministry said.

Dominican Republic Vice President and Head of the Health Cabinet Raquel Pena today lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for providing 50,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to help combat the coronavirus pandemic, reported news agency ANI.
"A month ago Dominican Republic received the first shipment of COVID-19 doses from India. We received 50,000 doses from the Serum Institute of India, of which 30,000 were donated from the Government of India. I would like to recognize the virtues of (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi for showing solidarity for a donation of vaccines," Raquel Pena said in a video message.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today said in the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal to appoint any commission to revisit the distribution of powers between the Centre and states as of now.
MHA denied any proposal of the said commission in its reply to a question from MPs NK Kateel and Sumalatha Ambareesh that said, "Whether any commission would be appointed to revisit distribution of Centre-state powers in view of objections raised by various states on the legislations relating to electricity, agriculture and if so, the details thereof?"

As the world's largest COVID-19 vaccination drive is underway in the country, India has administered a total of 3,29,47,432 vaccinations so far, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI.
