New Delhi: Cutting across party lines, 61 parliamentarians have moved a petition to remove Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy from the high court of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
It has been alleged that Justice Reddy misused his position as a high court judge to victimise a Dalit magistrate -- S Rama Krishna of Rayachoti. There have also been allegations of physical assault and abuse on caste lines.
There are criminal allegations against Justice Nagarjuna Reddy as well. It has been said that he wanted his brother Pavan Kumar Reddy's name removed from the dying declaration of a servant.
The declaration, made in November 2012, had accused Justice Reddy's brother of dousing the man M Ramanjulu with kerosene and setting him on fire.
The other allegations are that the judge possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and has not declared his assets to the Chief Justice in violation of the full court resolution of 1997.
The signing of the petition is the first step in the removal of the judge. With the petition being accepted, the Vice President has to write to the Chief Justice of India to appoint a committee consisting of sitting judges of the Supreme Court and High Court and an eminent jurist to inquire and investigate the charges against the judge.
