Legendary singer Sabita Chowdhury died at her residence this morning. She was 72. Family sources told news agency PTI that she was suffering from cancer for the last five months. Sabita Chowdhury, widow of music legend Salil Chowdhury, is survived by two sons, Sanjoy Chowdhury and Bobby Chowdhury, and two daughters, Antara and Sanchari. Sabita Chowdhury was detected with lung cancer and thyroid in January, reported PTI. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled Sabita Chowdhury's death on Twitter. "Saddened at the passing of popular singer Sabita Chowdhury (wife of Salil Chowdhury). My condolences to her family, friends and fans," she wrote.
Sabita Chowdhury's son Sanjoy Chowdhury is a successful music composer and has scored music for over a 100 feature films. Her daughter Antara is currently a performing artist. She sang for Music Director Shantanu Moitra's hit movie
Khoya Khoya Chand in a duet with Sonu Nigam.
Sabita Chowdhury's body will be kept at Rabindra Sadan for people to pay their last respects before the last rites are held.
Sabita Chowdhury, who had been actively involved with the Salil Chowdhury Foundation to preserve his songs, had rendered many popular songs in Bengali and Hindi. She also did playback singing for a number of Bengali and Hindi films.
In 1958, Sabita recorded the song
Mori Haay Go Haay for her husband Salil Chowdhury along with
Surero Ei Jhar Jharna.
