The student who was the unwavering focus of India's prayers and attention died this morning in a Singapore hospital. She fought courageously till the end. Earlier this month, she was raped by six men who also hit her male companion and her relentlessly with an iron rod.
In different cities today, Indians pledged that her death will not be in vain. The need for stricter anti-rape laws has been forced onto the agenda of politicians. So has the demand for better safety for women.
